Beyond Los Arqueros

The cable-ski water park near San Pedro Should you fancy a break from golf, you may care to explore the local area more fully. If you are still in the mood for sport, skiing, sailing and wind surfing is very accessible and there is a cable-ski park near San Pedro de Alcantara. Incidentally, San Pedro really comes alive at night with many good restaurants and bars but if you want the night club scene, Marbella is the place to go. You will also find a casino there if you fancy a flutter, but take your passport.

Any stay at El Lago should include a visit to the Moorish fortress town of Ronda. An hours climbing drive will find you in historic Ronda, home to one of the oldest bull rings in Spain and the Moorish baths, Banos Arabes.

Set high above a steep gorge, the views from the Puente Nuevo (New Bridge) are both spectacular and evocative. In the novel For whom the Bell Tolls, Hemingway recalls that Nationalist sympathisers were thrown into this gorge during the Civil War.

Celebrities' playground at Puerto Banus

For shopping lovers Puerto Banus is a 5 minute drive away. El Corte Ingles is the Costa del Sol's Selfridges and the many boutiques by the marina offer the chance to view Mediterranean sophistication at its best. A further 10 minutes will take you to vibrant Marbella. If you need a rest, make your way to Parque de la Alameda on the main high street and walk towards the sea-front for coffee, browsing at the many Salvador Dali bronzes along the way……..

…..or cross the road away from the sea to find the beauty and tranquillity of Marbella's old town. There are many inviting restaurants tucked away along the cobbled streets, but the Plaza de los Naranjos or square of orange trees, is a popular choice.

Wildlife nature reserve off the Ronda road

10kms along the Ronda road on the right, is the turning for Sierra de las Nieves - Reserva de la Biosfera - an unspoilt, protected nature reserve for walkers and bird lovers alike.

If you fancy going a bit further afield head west. In just over an hour you could be in Gibraltar or picking up a ferry to Tangier from nearby Algeciras.

However you like to spend your leisure time, the "Sunshine Coast" will bring you back time and time again.
